The Synagogue

Let yourself be guided and push open the door of this exceptional historic building, which bears witness to the presence of a large Jewish community in the Thann valley as early as the 13th century. Built in 1862 in neo-Byzantine style, it was ransacked during the Occupation and converted into the premises of the Winterhilfswerk (a service set up by the Nazis to help the destitute). It was restored after being returned to the community in 1948. Further work was undertaken in 1975. In 2014, during excavations, the Institut National de Recherches archéologiques préventives (INRAP) uncovered a ritual bath in the synagogue courtyard. It is also the starting point for the Route Hebraïca, the Kosher wine route. Discover this rich history in the company of a member of the association working to save the building.
