Farmhouse inns: watch out, tradition alert!
Besides their culinary specialties, when we talk about farmhouse inns, we must talk about traditions: transhumance (seasonal migration of livestock to summer pastures), marcaire (Vosges Farmer), Vosges cows…
Since the 19th century, the marcaire (from the Alsatian dialect « malker » which means milker) exploits and maintains the high stubble fields.
The marcaire is therefore a mountain farmer who practices transhumance and who operates a herd of dairy cows for the production of cheeses and in particular the famous Munster.
Today, these marcaires, most of whom are farmer-innkeepers, are the guardians of these ancestral traditions.
So, during a stroll on the Peaks Route, pay a visit to our farmer-innkeepers, sit on a terrace with a cold bier or a blueberry tart, envoy the view (always stunning) and fill up on mountain traditions.
