Traces of war and memory
Immerse yourself in the history of Alsace and its tumultuous past on a day that combines chronicles, nature and traditions. Discover the Hartmannswillerkopf site, its national monument, its preserved trenches and its Historial, before dining in a traditional inn and ending your visit with a final journey into the past.
On your way up the Route des Crêtes, stop off at the Col du Silberloch. Along the way, you'll find a vast free parking lot serving the site of the Hartmannswillerkopf, or Vieil-Armand. This peak is a former World War I battlefield.
Start your day by exploring the preserved trenches. Since 2014, the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield offers an immersive experience thanks to a signposted trail. Once you've discovered the trenches, return to your starting point to explore the Franco-German Historial.
The museum features exhibits, archival documents, historical artifacts and interactive displays that tell the story of the fighting, the soldiers and living conditions during the war.
For lunch, enjoy a marcaire menu in the hills at the Ferme Auberge du Freundstein.
For the afternoon, head to the Abri-Mémoire in Uffholtz. Explore art and historical reflection in this former shelter, which presents exhibitions on memory, citizenship and peace.
